The exterior was a beautiful marble that was weak & cracked. A huge slab detached, pulverizing the ground. Refacing with granite cost $80 million.
Olympic Stadiums (Athens, Greece)
$11 billion went to 2004 Olympic stadiums event table tennis & judo had their own. Now empty, they played a large part in Greece’s financial crisis.
Ryugyong Hotel (Pyongyang, North Korea)
Started in 1987 this 1,038 ft, 3,000 room hotel has sucked up 2% of North Korea’s GDP. It stands as an unfinished monolith to the government’s inefficiency.
Lotus Riverside (Shanghai, China)
Eleven 13 story flats. Excavation cause a river to flood the foundations, turning them to mud. One collapsed, barely missing the other towers.
John Hancock Tower (Boston, USA)
Built in 1976, this 60 floor building swayed scarily in winds. It’s windows also fell out, smashing to the ground. All 10,000 windows had to be replaced for $5 million.
Vdara Hotel & Spa (Las Vegas, USA)
A curved, mirrored glass building that unknowingly concentrated the
sun’s rays like a giant magnifying glass. Beaming into the swimming
pool, it burned guests.
